Fitness Fashion Trends: Serious Mesh

September 27, 2014 / 9 Comments

Mesh has always been a popular choice for activewear for obvious functional reasons.  Lately, several activewear games have been kicking their mesh game up a notch by experimenting with different types, especially ultra-wide cuts reminiscent of fishnet.  While lululemon has been incorporating a lot of garden variety mesh into their pieces lately (the seek the heat crops being the most recent example), I haven’t yet seen them venture into the bolder territory like the brands below.

The Upside’s white muscle tank uses mesh insets at the shoulders to create a muscle-tank-meets-racerback mesh mashup.

The Upside layered the same style mesh over classic bootie shorts to make their swerve shorts.

This sunset tank from Alo Yoga has mesh in the back and at the straps but is solid up front.

For a more classic fitness take, Alo Yoga’s long sleeve exhale top has mesh X insets at the back.  It comes in 3 bright colors plus black.  My Superficial Endeavors posted a handy review of two colors.

Alala’s supernova neoprene sweatshirt has a mesh inset across the decolletage. (Also in cobalt.)

And they use the same mesh as accents in other pieces, like their shadow hoodie.

For a little more subtle take, Michi’s storme cap sleeve top just has mesh at the sleeves.

And of course, I can’t mention Michi and mesh without mentioning the bionic bra.  Lauryn of The Skinny Confidential looks so great in this bra she could probably make anyone want it.

Michi’s revolt tee has an all-mesh back, a v-neck, and contoured hem.

I think I prefer LLL’s “garden variety” mesh. It’s sexy without being too over the top. I tend to workout with guys and wearing that bra while being spotted… Yikes.

Yeah, tbh I really have been going back and forth on how I feel about the more open mesh thing in general. On the one hand I think it’s cool and edgy, on the other hand maybe too goth and/or too sex-kitten for me. With the bionic bra in particular, like you mentioned, I would honestly probably never wear it for a workout because it’s a little too much. If I ever went out to parties/clubs I’m sure it would be useful, but I don’t, so…I’m not sure what that leaves, lol. I think it’s one of those things that’s nice in theory but in practice not super-wearable.

I hope so too! They don’t come up often though. I’m hoping for a Black Friday deal, but that’s kind of a long ways away. :

OMG, I totally hear you! Me too…btw I see Free People sells Alala too (not the purple yet though) and they at least have free shipping over $100 if I want to get the cobalt blue crops there. But good to know in general if they ever have codes. I don’t know anything about FP.
