Review: Splits59 Nova Trailblazer Capri in Hype

September 10, 2014 / 12 Comments

I had been eyeballing Splits59’s new hot pink color, hype, in their trailblazer capri ever since it uploaded to their website.  I’ve been a fan of S59 for quite a while so I have a pair of trailblazer capris in grey and I love the look.  When they put up their free shipping promo for Labor Day, I broke down and took the plunge.

Why would I need hot pink superhero-Barbie crops?

YOU MEAN WHY WOULDN’T I.

I bought these in an XS and, in my opinion, they’re best suited for a lulu 4.  I’m normally a 2 but the XS works well enough for me.

The fabric is luscious, creamy, and feels amazing.  It’s a supplex (nylon) blend that feels smooth and cottony, but isn’t too heavy.  The rise is a touch lower than most other crops, and the inseam is a slightly longer length that hits not too far above my ankle.  I really like this length as the weather creeps into cooler territory.  The website lists the inseam as 23″, but I measured mine at 21.5″, so this number may vary by size.

(BTW, the tank is also by Splits59: it’s their Devon tank, which happens to be another one of my favorites.)

And who can say no to that booty flattery?

In terms of opacity, like many light-ish colored tights, it’s good but not perfect.  You won’t be able to wear dark or brightly colored undies with these because the color will show through.  That said, given appropriate undergarment choices, there’s enough coverage that you’re not going to show everything or offend the person in class behind you.  Nude will definitely be your best undergarment bet, especially if you spend a lot of time bending and squatting like I do.  The not-quite-perfect coverage is my only complaint about these.

The back of the legs has a generous stripe of reflective fabric to help with night visibility.  The accent is aspen, a deep teal that’s another one of S59’s fall colors.  The front trim is lamé with pink mesh overlay.

The hype color is a rich, saturated HOT pink.  Compared with lululemon’s paris perfection, S59’s hype is a little lighter with a little less purple tones.  I can wear my paris perfection headband with the crops and it matches very well–if the colors are separated, they are largely indistinguishable.

Probably my favorite part of these pants: the waistband key pocket is lined with silver lamé.  I LOVE thoughtful details like this.

If you want a pair of your own, you can find them on the S59 website. (Pro tip: if you’ve never ordered from S59, get 10% off your order by signing up for their email list!) They’re currently still in stock in this color (hype) in all sizes: XS-L.  Now that I’m on my second pair of novas, I would definitely recommend the style in general as a great crop.  Especially when they’re hot pink superhero-Barbie crops.

They look awesome on you! I was tempted to get this color in the ginger tights, but I held back as I already have the neon pink (bubblegum shade). You’re right, the fabric is amazing. I spent 6 months stalking eBay for a pair of black viper nova capris and they were totally worth it.

Yeah, if you’re referring to the other shade of pink they made recently (trance it was called), the two are definitely really similar, so it would only make sense to have both colors if you had different styles. I really liked trance, but they didn’t make this particular style in that color, sadly!

Thanks!! I am indeed quite picky–I’ve been on a very limited shopping budget for a while now, so that definitely forces some serious choosiness. :)

how does the sizing run on the devon tank? contemplating that as a top for strength days, but as usual, need some guidance with respect to online purchasing.

Well, it’s definitely meant to be a looser-fitting tank so you have some wiggle room with sizing. I typically wear an XXS on top, but XS is the smallest they have, and it works on me (or at least I think it does, hah), but would also work if I was more of a tts XS. If you want it to be fitted, definitely go down from your usual size. If you like the looser fit like how it is on me or on the models, stick with your usual clothes size, or if you’re between, pick the larger of the 2 sizes. As far as exact numbers, I measured my XS devon tank pit-to-pit, and it’s 17″. A size 4 lulu swiftly is 13.75″ pit-to-pit. Also, btw, there are only 2 colors on the site right now, and they often have more, so if you don’t like the basic black or mimicry print, I would hold out for another release. (I really wanted it in hype, but they sold out! Boo.)

Ok, sorry for the short novel of a comment, but I hope that helps!

Booya! Fingers are crossed that it works out. :) I’m pretty “meh” about the purple fog energy bra, both in terms of the color itself, and because I generally prefer brighter colors with heathered grey, but that’s just me.

I’m in love with the Splits59 Kyms. As soon as I saw them in Hype in my barre studio, I grabbed them because, as you said: superhero Barbie. I workout better when I’m wearing them! ;)

Yes I love kyms too! I only have black though. I should probably work on that, haha.
